78 year old patient with history of heart attack 15 yrs ago came to the hospital in a critical state suffering from breathlessness even on taking 2 to 3 steps, vertigo, palpitations and a pulse rate as low as 30 to 35 beats per min. With age and years of heart disease , life became unbearable for him.
He was admitted in ICCU and DC shock (cardioversion) was given. A special Pacemaker named AICD (Automatic implantable cardiac defibrillator) was implanted in the patient. This device has the capacity to automatically regularize the erratic heart beats of the patient irrespective of his location. The device is MRI compatible.
Patient is well and can now walk comfortably for a distance of 2 km or more. Anytime in future, at any location, if the patients heart beats become irregular, this device will get activated, immediately give shock to the patient and regularize his heart beats.
This device was first implanted in Jalgaon successfully at Sanjeevan Heart Hospital by Dr. Milind Waykole.
